A seemingly anti-Semitic tweet posted by Ann Coulter, a conservative American news pundit, has set off a storm on social media.
Ann Coulter, a Fox News pundit, was apparently disturbed by the focus on Israel in statements made by Republican presidential candidates during a debate on Wednesday, leading her to tweet: “How many f—ing Jews do these people think there are in the United States?”
“Good grief! Huckabee is running for PM of Israel,” she tweeted in response to former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee’s pledge of support to the Jewish State.
“Cruz, Huckabee Rubio all mentioned ISRAEL in their response to: ‘What will AMERICA look like after you are president,'” she added in apparent irritation.
She also attacked the candidates’ focus on abortions and on late president Ronald Reagan, which she felt was a ploy to elicit applause from the audience.
The tweets set off a storm on Twitter, with many accusing Coulter of anti-Semitism.
Best-selling New York Times author Joel C. Rosenberg, in a tweet addressed to Coulter, asked her if she had lost her mind, adding that such comments are “not conservative,” but rather “anti-Semitic.”
“Ann Coulter’s tweets this evening concerning Israel were completely inappropriate,” Christians United for Israel (CUFI) stated. “The US-Israel relationship is both a moral and strategic imperative. There are tens of millions of Christians in this country who stand with the Jewish state.”
“Ann Coulter asks ‘how many f—ing Jews’ are there in America and then blithely dodges Fox News’ direct challenge of her gratuitous anti-Semitic slur. Disgusting,” Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, said in a statement. “And if a simple ‘I am sorry’ is beyond the reach of the vocabulary of this noted wordsmith, then perhaps she has unearned her spot among top tier political pundits.”
Coulter went on the defense by tweeting that it was time for Republicans to discuss issues other than those on which they all agree. “I like the Jews, I like fetuses, I like Reagan. Didn’t need to hear applause lines about them all night,” she tweeted, meaning she felt the candidates focused on these issues too extensively during the debate. She refused, however, to apologize for the offensive tweet in a follow-up interview on Fox.
