Living Torah: The Eternal Wrestling Match
This
week's Torah
portion is "Vayishlach" (Genesis 32:4 - 36:43). In it, we
read one of
the most mysterious, if not outright mystical, episodes in the book
of Genesis:
Jacob's all-night wrestling match with a strange
"man."
Our
sages teach us that this was no ordinary "man," but rather, it was an
angel! Esau's guardian angel to be exact. It was a long and difficult night,
but in the end, Jacob ultimately prevailed, as he held his opponent hostage
until he ransomed himself with a blessing. What was that blessing that he
received? A new name. YISRA-EL - "to struggle with the Godly."
This mysterious wrestling match has many interpretations.

"very bad deal" between Iran and the P5+1,
according to which
sanctions against the Islamic Republic would be removed.
Any deal that would
allow the Islamic Republic to maintain even a residual
capacity to enrich
uranium is extremely dangerous not only to Israel, but to
the global community,
the Israeli leader warned. On this issue, Israeli
politicians across the
political spectrum are united.

The Chanukah Story
Chanukah is a time to celebrate miracles, chief among them the miracle that
occurred after the Jews defeated the Greeks and returned to the Holy Temple.
Just as Greek philosophies promoted moral degradation, so too the Greeks
themselves literally defiled and desecrated the Holy Temple. In their wake,
they left just one small sealed vessel of pure Menorah oil, bearing the
stamped
certification of the Priest.
