Israeli Students Pray for America’s Hurricane Sandy Victims
As Hurricane Sandy hit the eastern coast of the United States, Israeli students studying in AMIT schools prayed for America’s well-being. Arutz Sheva reported that students read psalms in each of the 100 schools associated with the AMIT educational network.
AMIT director Dr. Amnon Eldar explained, “We have 25,000 students. Many of them are in Sderot, Ashkelon, and Be’er Sheva, and when they are in danger from rocket attacks, American Jews pray for them, support them, and come visit, and also help and contribute, because they are our brothers, our flesh and blood. Most citizens of the United States are good friends to the state of Israel, and when they are in trouble, we feel a real need to pray for them.”

Barrage of Rockets Hit Southern Israel
The past week has been a difficult one for Israel’s resident of the south. Nearly 100 rockets descended on Israel hitting the cities of Sderot, Ashkelon and surrounding towns. Residents of communities near Gaza were requested to remain within 15 seconds from a protected area. This onslaught of rocket fire follows the launching of three long-range rockets on Beersheva at the beginning of the week, which landed in the outskirts of the city, as well as two rockets hitting an open field in the Eshkol Regional Council about two hours prior.

Disabled Israelis Serving Their Country with Pride
20-year-old Eliran Oster, like most of his peers, dreamt of serving in the IDF. However, unlike most people in his age group, Eliran only has one arm. Nevertheless, he did not let this fact deter him from serving his country.
Eliran Oster is presently teaching new recruits and is uniquely able to motivate them to achieve as much as they possibly can. His message is that any thing is possible if you set your mind to it. Eliran Oster asserted, “I am seriously thinking of going for officers training. Even without a hand its possible to serve in the IDF, people with disabilities should enlist. Any thing is possible.” Eliran Oster is far from the only disabled Israeli who feels this way and has managed to overcome serious physical and mental impediments in order to serve Israel.

Abraham: Kindness at Any Cost!
This week’s Torah portion is Vayeira (Genesis 18:1-22:24). The reading opens with Abraham sitting at the entrance of his tent hoping to be able to greet visitors and welcome passersby into his home. But it was not to be. This is because just a few days ago, Abraham obeyed God’s commandment to circumcise himself and he was still in pain.
As such, God made the temperatures sweltering hot in order that people would remain indoors and not venture out that day. This way, Abraham, eager to fulfill the mitzva of hachnassat orchim, welcoming guests, no matter what his level of pain, would be able to rest up.
