PURIM: Turning Sadness into Joy!
The festive holiday of Purim commemorates Israel’s salvation from extermination by the mighty Persian Empire, some 2500 years ago. Jews in Israel and all over the world celebrate Purim on the 14th day of Adar (this year March 8th) as a time of “Light, Gladness, Joy and Honor for the Jewish people” (Esther 8:16).
Purim is a classic story of deep-rooted anti-semitism, pitting a powerful ruler (King Ahasuerus) and his vicious, arrogant advisor (Haman) against the Nation of Israel. Plans were drawn up for the “final solution” – wiping the Jews off the face of the earth. The word ”Purim” means lottery – referring to the method used to determine the fateful day set aside for the annihilation of the Jews.

Bar-Oz, 33, said her store is often targeted by anti-Israel protesters shouting anti-Semitic slogans.

“If you are silent now…”
by Rabbi Moshe Rothchild
I purposely only quoted half the verse above from the book of Esther. Often when I speak with groups about the Book of Esther I will quote the above half verse and ask them to guess what the rest of the verse is. Of course you need to know the background first. The wicked Haman has plotted to exterminate the Jewish people and Mordechai, the leader of the Jews, gets wind of this.
Prior to these events Mordechai’s relative Esther became queen of Persia when she was selected by King Ahaseurus to be the next queen. So Mordechai sends a message to Esther telling her that she must go and speak to the king and ask him to help.
