My First Israel Independence Day!

by Rabbi Tuly Weisz

When I think of “Independence Day”, my first thoughts are of “Red, White and Boom,” the annual July 4th firework display in my hometown back in Ohio. Like so many American families, we would head downtown after dark and spread out a blanket on the grass to watch the impressive pyrotechnic display and wake up early the next morning to get a good spot along the parade route to wave at our friends marching with the floats.

As this is my first ‘Yom Haatzmaut’ (Israel Independence Day) after making aliyah with my family, I have been reflecting upon the similarities and differences between the Independence Day I grew up with and the one I will be celebrating this year.

Happy Birthday Israel: From Mourning to Celebration

Why is tragedy compelling? Why is fear motivating? Why is mourning viewed as a greater obligation than celebrating? Why are more people familiar with the details of the Holocaust than the history of Zionism and Israel? These are the questions that occupy my thoughts as we approach Yom Haatzmaut, Israel Independence Day.

To garner our support for the State of Israel we are inundated with images of Hezbollah missiles, Iran’s potential nuclear weapons, suicide bombings, divestment campaigns and in the estimation of many, dwindling support from the Obama administration. These are great worries to be sure. Israel does indeed face numerous threats.

YOM HAZIKARON
‘Yom HaZikaron’: Israel’s Memorial Day

Yom HaZikaron, which takes place every year in the beginning of the month of Iyar, comes out this year to Wednesday April 25th. Also known as Israel Memorial Day, Yom HaZikaron is a time to remember all those who lost their lives in struggle for Israeli independence as well as the soldiers who have died while serving in Israel’s armed forces. Victims of terrorist acts are also remembered.
