Jerusalem Day: What Happened 45 Years Ago?
Jerusalem Day, or Yom Yerushalayim in Hebrew, is coming up this Sunday, May 20th. It is a national Israeli holiday commemorating the reunification of Jerusalem and the establishment of Israeli control over the Old City in June 1967. Jerusalem day was declared by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel as a minor religious holiday, to thank God for the miraculous victory in the Six-Day War and for answering the 2,000-year-old prayer of "Next Year in Jerusalem".

For example, I gave up on the usage of "West Bank" when I learned that the term was invented by the Jordanians in the middle of the last century.
Those of us who care about the Jewish people, and therefore care about the Jewish state, need to be much more cognizant of how the language that we use predetermines conclusions. If speaking of the “Occupation” with a capital “O” condemns the Jews of the Middle East before the conversation even gets started, then why should we use that language?

Here's the text of full-page ads that Elie Wiesel took out last year in the The International Herald Tribune, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times:
|
It was inevitable: Jerusalem once again is at the center of political debates and international storms. New and old tensions surface at a disturbing pace.
