The Israeli Science and Technology Ministry has announced that the 2015 International Space Conference will be held in Jerusalem. The decision was made at the annual conference of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF), held in Naples, Italy. The IAF aims to advance space know-how and the development of products by encouraging international cooperation. Its 250 member organizations around the world make it largest international body in the field of space.
Israel’s bid to host the event was supported and encouraged by President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Knesset, the Supreme Court, the Science and Technology Ministry, the Tourism Ministry, the Foreign Ministry and the Jerusalem Municipality. Israel defeated the bids of Thailand and Mexico to win the right to host the world’s largest gathering on space. The conference will attract many tourists to Jerusalem and will include 30 symposiums and 2,000 lectures by experts from 70 countries in addition to a huge space exhibition.
Science and Technology Minister Daniel Herschkowitz reacted to the good news with great excitement and declared that “Participants will become Israel’s ‘ambassadors’ to the world in the field of space by seeing our advances in the field.”
Israel Space Agency director-general Menachem Kidron explained: “We worked for a whole year on our bid to host the 2015 conference. It will bring honor to the country and the space agency, and the investment has proven itself. It will advance Israeli space activity in academia and industry.”
