There has been a growing fear that rebel groups may get hold of Syria’s vast chemical and biological weapons stockpiles if President Assad falls. The threat of this actually happening has increased in recent months after four members of Assad’s inner circle were killed in a suicide bombing in July.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made the following declaration to European ambassadors visiting with him in Jerusalem:

“Israel will do everything it takes to ensure Syria’s chemical weapons do not fall into the hands of terrorist organizations — and if such a situation arises, then Israel will weigh a military option.”
