That doesn’t mean there wasn’t a Jewish presence in the land prior to 1948. The Jewish people have maintained a connection to the land ever since the Second Jewish Temple was destroyed nearly 2000 years ago. Despite the most difficult hardships, Jews remained and unfortunately many were killed, in their quest to ensure a permanent presence in the Holy Land.
