PortugueseNinety-four members of the Iranian parliament have signed a motion demanding that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad appear before them and answer questions about the country’s economic struggles. MP Mohammad Damadi, who is among the sponsors of the motion, said that the proposal will be passed on to the Parliamentary Board next Sunday.
Deputy head of the parliament’s foreign policy and national security committee, Mansour Hagighatpour, said that “Ahmadinejad should be questioned about more than just economics,” explaining that economic crisis has also impacted Iran’s internal security.
Despite the fact that Ahmadinejad’s term of office expires in 2013, experts question whether he will last until the end of his term because of the extreme public pressure against him. after which he cannot run for president again.
This news comes as Foreign Policy Magazine reports that in recent days the United States and Israel have made progress regarding plans for a possible joint attack on the Iranian nuclear facilities. David Rothkopf writes: “According to a source close to the discussions the action that participants currently see as most likely is a joint U.S.-Israeli surgical strike targeting Iranian enrichment facilities. The strike might take only ‘a couple of hours’ in the best case and only would involve a ‘day or two’ overall, the source said, and would be conducted by air, using primarily bombers and drone support.”

Those who favor the approach argue that, as far as the American public is concerned, it is likely to be more politically palatable than a larger scale war. Moreover, they say, if it is successful – knocking out enrichment facilities, setting the Iranian nuclear program back many year without creating a long term war and civilian casualties.
