 Después de volar como los mejores combatientes durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el comandante Gideon Lichtman viajó al naciente Estado de Israel para unirse a la Guerra de la Independencia. Su contribución al Estado judío siguió siendo un secreto familiar durante años.

Cuando las noticias llegaron a los EE. UU. de que el recién fundado Estado de Israel estaba siendo atacado, Gideon Lichtman se unió a un pequeño grupo de pilotos que formaron la recién nacida Fuerza Aérea israelí.

A pesar de utilizar equipos anticuados, derribó un Spitfire egipcio el 8 de junio de 1948.

Después de la guerra, la inteligencia israelí descubrió que las naciones árabes quisieron asesinar a Gideon Lichtman, y su identidad cambió a Gideon Rimon. Luego pasó a enseñar durante 30 años en Florida sin que sus alumnos se enteraran nunca de sus hazañas.

Lichtman, de 94 años, murió el 7 de marzo. Fue enterrado con honores en el Cementerio Nacional de Arlington.
