JAI – Un 2 de julio, pero de 1946, nac\u00eda en Nueva York Richard Axel, un destacado m\u00e9dico e investigador jud\u00edo que en el 2004 gan\u00f3 el premio Nobel de Medicina por sus investigaciones sobre el sistema olfativo.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

En 1967, se recibi\u00f3 en la Universidad de Columbia, y cuatro a\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde logr\u00f3 si t\u00edtulo de doctorado en la Universidad Johns Hopkins. En 1978 regres\u00f3 a Columbia para dedicarse a dar clases.<\/p>\n

A partir de los setenta, Axel trabaj\u00f3 junto al microbi\u00f3logo Saul Silverstein y al genetista Michael Wigler, equipo que descubri\u00f3 una t\u00e9cnica para analizar el ADN y realizar un proceso para introducirlo en una c\u00e9lula extra\u00f1a a dicho ADN.<\/p>\n

En su principal trabajo, publicado en 1991, Buck and Axel clonaron receptores olfatorios, demostrando que provienen de la familia de los receptores G acoplados a prote\u00ednas. Analizando ADN de rata, estimaron que debe haber al menos mil diferentes genes para los receptores olfatorios en el genoma de los mam\u00edferos.<\/p>\n

Estas investigaciones le significaron el Premio Nobel de Medicina en el a\u00f1o 2004.<\/p>\n
