El estudio fue realizado por la Dra. Ines Zucker de la Escuela de Ingenier\u00eda Mec\u00e1nica y la Escuela Porter de Ciencias del Medio Ambiente y de la Tierra, de la Universidad de Tel Aviv, junto con el estudiante del doctorado Andrey Eitan Rubin.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"ES-AR\">El estudio fue publicado recientemente en la prestigiosa revista Chemosphere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"ES-AR\">Micropl\u00e1stico, es un nombre\u00a0 general para los materiales pl\u00e1sticos que aparecen en una configuraci\u00f3n de part\u00edculas y fibras microsc\u00f3picas de un tama\u00f1o de decenas de micrones y hasta unos pocos mil\u00edmetros. Los micropl\u00e1sticos pueden hallarse en todo lugar: en los pozos, en el suelo, en los productos alimenticios, en las botellas de agua e incluso en los glaciares del Polo Norte. Los investigadores explican que debido a que el pl\u00e1stico no es un material natural, se descompone muy lentamente en la naturaleza, en un proceso que a veces dura miles de a\u00f1os, y como parte de este proceso, se forman los mismos micropl\u00e1sticos. A trav\u00e9s del proceso, las part\u00edculas micropl\u00e1sticas encuentran contaminantes ambientales que se adhieren a su superficie, y como una pareja, los mismos pueden plantear una amenaza para la salud del medio ambiente y de los seres humanos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"ES-AR\">En el estudio, los investigadores examinaron el proceso completo que atraviesa el micropl\u00e1stico, desde sus interacciones con los contaminantes ambientales hasta la liberaci\u00f3n de los mismos y la creaci\u00f3n de una toxicidad incrementada. Los investigadores hallaron que la adsorci\u00f3n de esos contaminantes org\u00e1nicos a los micropl\u00e1sticos multiplica por 10 la toxicidad y tambi\u00e9n puede causar un grave impacto en los seres humanos que est\u00e1n expuestos a los alimentos \u00a0y bebidas contaminados.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"ES-AR\">La Dra. Zucker explica: \u201cEn este estudio hemos demostrado de que incluso, en concentraciones muy bajas de contaminantes ambientales, los cuales no son t\u00f3xicos para el ser humano, una vez que se adsorben al micropl\u00e1stico se registra un significativo aumento de la toxicidad. Esto sucede debido a que los micropl\u00e1sticos son una especie de \u201cim\u00e1n\u201d para los contaminantes ambientales, al concentrarlos en sus superficies, \u201ctransport\u00e1ndolos\u201d a trav\u00e9s de nuestro tracto digestivo, y liber\u00e1ndolos en forma concentrada en \u00e1reas determinadas, causando as\u00ed el aumento de la toxicidad\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"ES-AR\">El estudiante del doctorado Andrey Eitan Rubin, agrega: \u201cPor primera vez, estamos presentado un ciclo de vida\u201d completo de los micropl\u00e1sticos: desde el momento en que salen al medio ambiente, pasando por la adsorci\u00f3n de los contaminantes ambientales \u00a0y hasta la toxicidad compartida en los seres \u00a0humanos. La cantidad de residuos arrojada al oc\u00e9ano anualmente, es enorme, el ejemplo m\u00e1s conocido es la isla del pl\u00e1stico en el Oc\u00e9ano Pac\u00edfico, que tiene una superficie \u00a080 veces m\u00e1s grande que el Estado de Israel. Pero \u00e9ste no es un problema lejano-los datos preliminares de nuestro demuestran que las costas de Israel se hallan entre las m\u00e1s contaminadas\u00a0 con residuos micropl\u00e1sticos. Cada una de las part\u00edculas micropl\u00e1sticas secretadas en estas zonas, tiene un incre\u00edble potencial de da\u00f1o, ya que sirven de plataforma efectiva y estable para todos los contaminantes que puedan encontrar en su camino hacia el cuerpo humano\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"ES-AR\">La Dra. Zucker, concluye se\u00f1alando: \u201cHemos hallado que la capacidad de adsorci\u00f3n de una part\u00edcula micropl\u00e1stica oxidada (la configuraci\u00f3n del micropl\u00e1stico tras someterse a la intemperie ambiental) es mucho m\u00e1s elevada que la de una part\u00edcula no oxidada. Despu\u00e9s de que los contaminantes ambientales se adsorben al micropl\u00e1stico, la part\u00edcula precargada, puede llegar al tubo digestivo a trav\u00e9s de la ingesta de alimentos y agua contaminados, donde libera las toxinas estando muy cerca de las c\u00e9lulas del tubo digestivo, incrementando as\u00ed la toxicidad de estas sustancias. Este es otro doloroso recordatorio de las terribles consecuencias de la contaminaci\u00f3n del medio ambiente marino y terrestre, con residuos industriales peligrosos, que lamentablemente ha sido saturado \u00a0de pl\u00e1stico en las \u00faltimas d\u00e9cadas. Los peligros no son te\u00f3ricos, sino que son m\u00e1s tangibles que nunca.
