Frederik Willem de Klerk, the last president of apartheid South Africa, stated Sunday that imposing sanctions against Israel was no way to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict\u00a0and that labeling Israel an apartheid state was repugnant.<\/p>\n

The former South African president, who helped end apartheid in that country, told Israel Radio<\/em> that he thinks \u201ccomparisons are odious and wouldn’t like to draw direct comparisons\u201d between Israel and apartheid South Africa<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI prefer dialogue and negotiation as a way to get governments to change their attitudes,\u00bb he said.\u00a0\u00abI think sanctions are more counterproductive than helpful to change any country on the course it is taking.\u00bb<\/p>\n

Those who support boycotting Israeli goods or\u00a0goods made in Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria<\/a> often point to a similar campaign credited with having undermined white rule in South Africa. Israel rejects the comparison, saying that\u00a0the boycotts are aimed at delegitimizing its very existence. De Klerk apparently agrees\u00a0with Israel, explaining\u00a0that sanctions would delay positive developments.<\/p>\n

Sanctions against South Africa \u00abhurt the people they were intended to help\u00bb and \u201csometimes delayed the reforms,\u00bb he said. They \u00abhad the effect of driving the white population, who at that stage had all the power, into a corner, and they resisted it fiercely.\u00bb<\/p>\n

De\u00a0Klerk\u00a0was the last president under apartheid and, along with Nelson Mandela, ended its systematic racial discrimination. They both won the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize.<\/p>\n
