Israel’s leadership rallied behind President Donald Trump after he announced that the US is withdrawing from the nuclear deal with Iran and that it is re-imposing sanctions against Tehran.

In a televised statement given minutes after Trump made his announcement on Tuesday evening, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that “Israel fully supports” Trump’s “bold decision” to “reject the disastrous nuclear deal with the terrorist regime in Tehran.”

Netanyahu explained that the nuclear deal “didn’t push war further away, it actually brought it closer. The deal didn’t reduce Iran’s aggression, it dramatically increased it, and we see this across the entire Middle East.”

Referring to Israel’s exposure last week of the Iranian Amad Project, Netanyahu said that “since the deal, Iran intensified its efforts to hide its secret nuclear weapons program.”

“If you leave all of this unchanged, all this combined is a recipe for disaster, a disaster for our region, a disaster for the peace of the world,” Netanyahu said, and “this is why Israel thinks that President Trump did an historic move and this is why Israel thanks President Trump for his courageous leadership, his commitment to confront the terrorist regime in Tehran and his commitment to ensure that Iran never gets nuclear weapons, not today, not in a decade, not ever.”

‘Important and Significant Step’

President Reuven Rivlin issued a statement saying that Trump’s move against Iran “constitutes an important and significant step in ensuring the security of the State of Israel, the security of the region and the security of the entire free world.”

“The threat of Iranian consolidation is not a threat to the State of Israel alone, and therefore international pressure is necessary in the struggle against this danger,” he stated.

Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Danny Danon held a series of conversations with Security Council (UNSC) members following Trump’s decision.

“This is a historic decision that provides the prospect for a new era of security and stability in the Middle East,” Danon stated.

He urged “a united front against this regime that promotes terror and sows instability,” in order to “put an end to the Iranian aggression, which threatens our region and the entire international community.”

When announcing the US’ withdrawal from the nuclear deal, Trump explained that “the Iranian promise was a lie,” in reference to the Islamic Republic’s assurances under the agreement, which he also called a “giant fiction.”

“America will not be held hostage,” Trump warned, promising to “reinstate nuclear sanctions on the Iranian regime… [and] the highest level of economic sanctions.”
