Israel estimates that at least 50 Israeli Arabs have joined ISIS in Syria and Iraq over the past two years. At least ten of them have been arrested upon their return to the country and a few others have been killed in action.

An Arab Israeli woman, a mother of five, doctoral candidate and resident of Shfar’am in northern Israel who was arrested last August en route to joining the Islamic State (ISIS) terror organization, was sentenced on Tuesday by an Israeli court to 22 months in prison.

Iman Ahmed Mohamed Kanjou, 44, was seized by Turkish authorities as she was about to cross into Syria with a group of aspiring ISIS members from around the world. She was deported back to Israel, where she was arrested by authorities at Ben Gurion Airport.

She admitted that her goal was to live under Muslim Shari’a law and that ISIS embodied her views.

Kanjou began to disseminate information about ISIS and her support for the terrorist organization through social media. She also contacted an ISIS operative online, who promised to help her get to Syria and join the Islamic group.

She hoped to help them by teaching classes on Islam in order to “boost their motivation.” She has a doctoral degree in Islamic studies from Al-Azhar University in Cairo.

She also expressed willingness to do anything else requested by ISIS.

Kanjou was convicted by the Haifa District Court of traveling to an enemy country unlawfully and for maintaining contact with a foreign agent. She was given an additional suspended sentence of one year and a fine of about $7,800.

Over the past year, Israeli security forces have exposed several ISIS terror cells operating in Israel, comprised mostly of Arabs with Israeli citizenship.

Israel estimates that at least 50 Israeli Arabs have joined ISIS in Syria and Iraq over the past two years. At least ten of them have been arrested upon their return to the country and a few others have been killed in action.

Israel fears that Arabs returning to Israel from fighting with ISIS will use their experience to establish terror networks and launch attacks within Israel, or that Arabs in Israel will be inspired by ISIS, especially via social media, and will operate against the Jewish state and its citizens.
