A 39-year-old mother of four named Yael Re’em Matzpun managed to overcome a Palestinian terrorist who broke into her house in Sdei Avraham with the intent of harming her and her children.

The terrorist, armed with a knife and an iron rode, succeeded to stab Yael in the face and shoulder and to cause property damage. Yet nevertheless, Yael, with her strong determination to live and to protect her family, managed to overpower the terrorist. Yael’s father, Danny Matzpun, told Yedioth Achronot that upon sending her children to the safe room, “she pushed him into the bathroom and blocked the door using one of the kids’ beds.” Yael then proceeded to call for help.

While Yael was calling for assistance, the terrorist managed to escape out of the bathroom window. Matzpun claimed that the terrorist realized that he could not physically overpower his daughter. Evidently, Yael is an athlete trained in Krav Maga, Israeli military hand-to-hand combat. Nevertheless, IDF forces managed to catch up with the terrorist. When soldiers attempted to arrest the terrorist, the Palestinian terrorist attempted to attack the IDF soldiers. As a result, the IDF opened fire on him, killing the assailant. The IDF spokesman office is convinced that this was a terrorist attack and not a case of robbery since the Palestinian intruder was not in the middle of a burglary when the home-owners discovered him.

Or Gadashi, a neighbor of Yael’s, asserted, “We never imagined anything like this happening. Thank G-d it ended the way it did and that she’s strong enough to deal with this.” Haim Yalin, head of the Eshkol Regional Council that was targeted by numerous Hamas rockets in the past, declared, “The woman is a true hero; she managed to chase him away. There are many infiltrations by terrorists who are caught. This is the first time that a terrorist makes it into a home.”

Yael’s father added, “This could have ended as a second Itamar incident,” in reference to the slaughter of five members of the Fogel family in 2011 when terrorists broke into their home with similar murderous intentions. However, because Yael was alert, tough, athletic and trained to deal with such situations, this did not happen. As for the family presently, Yael’s father claimed, “No one is really panicking. My daughter is better. They stitched her cuts and the children aren’t exhibiting any signs of distress.” Sdei Avraham, which is close to both Gaza and the Sinai, is located in the Hevel Shalom, which has dealt with infiltrations and Palestinian shooting attacks in the past.
