Two Palestinian terrorists stabbed a police officer in Jerusalem’s Old City on Thursday, after which security forces opened fire on the attackers, killing one and sending the other to the hospital critically wounded.

The injured Israeli, a 40-year-old officer, sustained stab wounds to the upper body and was treated at Shaare Tzedek Hospital in Jerusalem, Times of Israel reported

“We gave him medical care, including stopping the bleeding and bandaging him, and we took him to the hospital,” a medic quoted by the Times explained.

The stabbing occurred near the Chain Gate, not far from the Temple Mount, where Palestinians rioted this week over Jews praying there on Tisha B’Av.

Tisha B’Av is the day on which the Jewish people mourn the destruction of both Holy Temples in Jerusalem, which stood for a combined total of close to 1,000 years.

The Islamic trust that currently oversees the Temple Mount bans prayer by any non-Muslims, and Jews and Christians who attempt to pray have been the target of intense harassment.
