The United States is on the verge of giving Egypt brand new F-16 fighter jets and M1A1 Abrams battle tanks, despite the fact that the Muslim Brotherhood presently controls Egypt. The Egyptian Daily Al Masry Al Youm even quotes a senior level Egyptian official as stating that the weapons deal is proceeding “smoothly,” despite the current political situation in Egypt. Although the deal was signed two years ago when former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was still in power, the Obama administration did not make adjustments due to the regime change in Egypt.
Some American lawmakers were appalled that the US is still giving weapons to Egypt. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen declared, “The Obama administration wants to simply throw money at an Egyptian government that the president cannot even clearly state is an ally of the United States.” Indeed, it was not too long ago that Egyptian protesters stormed the American Embassy and burnt down the American flag. Nevertheless, after Afghanistan and Israel, Egypt remains the third largest recipient of US aid money.
Historically, the main reason why Egypt has been getting so much aid from the United States is because Egypt signed a peace treaty with Israel. However, whether or not President Morsi will in fact honor the peace treaty with Israel remains to be seen. The Israeli Embassy in Egypt was stormed during the revolution and the Israeli Embassy in Cairo has not been reopened. Israeli pilgrims have been barred from visiting Egypt to go on a pilgrimage to the grave of Rabbi Yaakov Abuchatzeira. Egyptian Jews living in Egypt continue to live in fear, as Islamists protest granting them any sort of basic human rights.
The words of President Morsi are also not very encouraging for any one who supports peace between Israel and Egypt. According to Egyptian President Morsi, “The Palestinian Authority was created by the Zionist and American enemies for the sole purpose of opposing the will of the Palestinian people and its interests…Either (you accept) the Zionists and everything they want, or else it is war…these blood-suckers who attack the Palestinians, these warmongers, the descendants of apes and pigs…None of the Arab regimes should have dealings with them. They should be driven out of this country.”
Various Jewish organizations are alarmed by the anti-semitism and prejudice presently coming out of Egypt, thus raising questions whether Egypt plans to uphold the peace treaty. According to Kenneth Jacobson, deputy national director of the Anti-Defemation League, “When the leader of a country has a history of statements demonizing Jews, and he does not do anything to correct it, it makes sense that many people in Israel would conclude that he cannot be trusted as a partner for peace.”
Furthermore, the Muslim Brotherhood leadership in Egypt topped the Simon Wiesenthal’s list of the worst anti-semitic slurs and anti-Israel slurs in 2012. They evidently ranked worse than Iran, who came in second place. Yet, despite these facts, the US still plans on giving Egypt weapons that could one day be used against America’s number one ally in the region.

Dear Senator,
It has come to my attention that the United States plans on giving Egypt brand new F-16 fighter jets and M1A1 Abrams battle tanks, despite the fact that the Muslim Brotherhood presently controls Egypt. The Muslim Brotherhood is not a reliable ally for the United States. Groups such as Al Qaeda and Hamas, which the United States considers to be terrorist organizations, sprung out of the Muslim Brotherhood. Egypt’s President and other Muslim Brotherhood leaders have expressed contempt for the United States and Israel, America’s strongest ally in the Middle East. American flags have been burned in Egypt. Given these facts, I feel very uncomfortable with the United States giving Egypt any weapons at this time.
Sincerely,
