In 1969, Golda Meir was appointed Prime Minister of Israel, making her the fourth leader of the modern Jewish state.

Golda Meir was born in Kiev in 1898 at a time when pogroms and persecution were part of daily Jewish life in that part of the world. It left a lasting impression on young Golda.

When Golda was eight years old, her family emigrated to America, where she became an active member of Young Poale Zion, a Zionist Labor movement. She was passionate about fulfilling her dream of moving to the Land of Israel and doing her part to build a Jewish state.
