A Zionist explains why he distrusts the “liberal left,” citing examples of what he sees as unfairness in their judgment of Israel and the damage it does in the Middle East and around the world.
Aaron Balshan, a senior geopolitical security analyst with an expertise in jihadist movements in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, served as a staff sergeant in the IDF.
In poetic form, he discusses the unwarranted obsession with Israel in the form of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanction (BDS) movement, which, he explains, has a tremendously negative impact on the amount of attention given to true human rights abusers. It also alienates liberal Jews in Israel, the exact constituency that the international left should be empowering, if peace and coexistence is truly their objective, he says.

The unwarranted obsession with Israel in the form of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanction (BDS) movement is morally inconsistent and given the resurging rates of global antisemitism, it's kind of creepy. It has a tremendously negative impact on the amount of attention other, more egregious human rights abusers get. It also alienates liberal Jews in Israel, the exact constituency that the international left should be empowering, if peace and coexistence is truly their objective. Now, without any ideological home on the left, I and so many other Israelis like me have been forced to move away from our natural camp. This poem is meant to spotlight these feelings by calling out similar situations to Israel’s and to describe why it ultimately reinforces old tropes, harms other oppressed populations, and makes a viable peace with the Palestinians more difficult.
