IDF
Infantry: Training for the Future of War
The nature of
combat is changing. The IDF’s upper command has long understood that the
tactics and techniques that it took to defeat the conventional militaries of
states like Egypt and Syria in 1948, 1967 and 1973 will no longer be relevant
in the next war that Israel has to fight.
Terrorist
organizations including Hamas and Hezbollah – which have sworn themselves
to Israel’s destruction – have a proven track record of entrenching
themselves inside civilian communities which they then use as human shields.
They dig tunnels deep underground for smuggling weapons and infiltrating
Israeli territory to strike civilian targets. Just last week a tunnel was
discovered leading from Gaza into Israeli territory – the third in the
past year alone.

Urgent
Campaign to Keep the Pressure on Iran
Iran’s actions, including installing
over 1000 new centrifuges capable of rapidly creating weapons-grade uranium
from low-grade uranium, and its refusal allow UN inspectors access to
Iran’s nuclear sites, reflect a violent agenda that
speaks louder than Rouhani’s words of peace.
In response, United with Israel has
launched a major campaign (visit www.stopiran.org) to keep the pressure
on Iran. It’s main goal is to keep world leaders, including US President
Barack Obama, focused on the Iranian nuclear threat, and to increase the
pressure by imposing harsher sanctions on the Iranian regime.Senior Iranian
officials have openly declared that “Iran’s nuclear activities
continue as in the past”, and that Iran is “continuing the
enrichment of uranium to the 20 percent level.”

Israel Wary of Trusting Security in Jordan Valley to
UN
In light of international
forces’ previous failed attempts to maintain peace in the Jordan Valley,
70 percent of Israelis oppose an IDF withdrawal from the region.
According to these statistics, the
future of this region, which is one of several discussion items in the current
Israel-Palestinian Authority peace talks, raises security concerns for the
majority of Israelis.
The Jewish
Center for Public Affairs (JCPA) posted a video highlighting the
perceived dangers of future arrangements involving international forces.

Living
Torah: The Birthright Battle
This
week’s Torah portion is Toldot (Genesis 25:19 – 28:9), and it opens
with a genealogical recording of Abraham’s family. One of the central
features of this week’s reading is the struggle – the eternal
struggle – between Jacob and Esau.
In
this case, it was the struggle over the birthright and who would become the
next leader of the Jewish people. As we will see, however, ownership of the
birthright really wasn’t much of a struggle – more of a culinary
experience. So, too, we will see how one of the greatest lessons in
decision-making can be learned from the wicked Esau.
