"The Power Of Unity" - A Meaningful Lesson from the Holiday of Sukkot

(by Rabbi Ari Enkin) There are many interpretations as to what each of the four species of Sukkot represent. According to one approach, the four species are compared to the Sanhedrin (the ancient Supreme Religious Council), Torah scholars, three "rows" of students, and two court scribes. Another interpretation teaches that the four species represent Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph.

There is the much celebrated interpretation that compares the four species to four similar looking limbs of the human body: the spine, lips, eyes, and heart teaching us that we should include our entire body in the service of God.

VIDEO: The Essence of Sukkot

What is the holiday of Sukkot really all about?

As Rabbi Dov Lipman explains in this informative and inspiring video, Jews "dwell" in the Sukkah for seen days to recall the experience of the Israelites who lived in these booth during their sojourn in the desert after the exodus from Egypt. This teaches us that our shelter comes from God and that He protects us from the elements. The experience of living in the simple booth also helps to break down the barrier of materialism which prevents us from being more spiritual.

The mitzvah (commandment) of the Four Species further cements the idea of that everything we have comes directly from God. We take crops - from the lowliest crop to a high level crop - and wave them in the service of God to demonstrate that He is the source of these crops.

Sukkot: Why are we moving outside into huts?

Yes, That's right. ANOTHER Jewish holiday. Sunday evening begins the holiday of Sukkot. Sukkot is one of the three Torah festivals on which Jews everywhere were required to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. It is a seven day holiday with the first day being observed as a holy day, similar to the Sabbath, upon which no work is permitted. Outside of Israel the first two days are observed as holy days.

The remaining days of the holiday are referred to as "Chol Hamoed".
