UK Chief Rabbi’s Prayer for the 1972 Olympic Tragedy
Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks of the UK composed a special prayer to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the massacre at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, in which 11 Israeli athletes were murdered by Palestinian terrorists.
Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks is the Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth of Nations is an intergovernmental organisation of 54 independent member states including The United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and South Africa.

The Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games is one of the most watched events around the world.
People from all over the globe, in hundreds of countries, tune in for the spectacle. The Olympic Games is one of the few events that brings the world together in such a way. These 2012 games are the 40th anniversay of the human tragedy that happened in Munich in 1972, when 11 Israelis were killed as part of a hostage crisis.

Olympic Silence: Israel Mourns Alone

I was 11 years old and a fanatical sports fan. I could stay glued to the TV and radio for hours on end, rooting for my hometown teams. The pinnacle sporting event was the Olympics, providing not only a panoply of world-class athletics, but a once-in-four-year opportunity to root for my “special Jewish home team”: Israel.
The 1972 Munich Olympics started with a bang. Mark Spitz, the mustachioed Jewish-American swimmer (who proudly participated in Israel’s Maccabiah Games) entered seven swimming events – and promptly set an incredible seven world records in the course of winning a record seven gold medals.

Orthodox Jew Runs In London Olympic Torch Relay
The founder of London’s Shomrim patrol was one of 187 people to carry the Olympic torch along its almost forty mile journey through South London, amid brilliant sunshine and enthusiastic cheers.
Twenty two year old Efrayim Goldstein of Stamford Hill told VIN News that he began his day at 4 AM, when he was driven down to Lewisham and began to prepare for the day’s festivities.
While Goldstein donned the same white official Olympic uniform as the other 8,000 torch bearers, he was the only one to receive an official Olympic yarmulke, which he described as white, bearing the same design as the uniform.
