Two IDF reservists were killed in the Gaza Strip on Thursday after an Israeli military drone exploded in what the army has described as a serious safety incident.
The fallen soldiers were identified as Master Sgt. (res.) Nadav Kali, 24, of Har Halutz, and Master Sgt. (res.) Ofek Moalem, 23, of Jerusalem. Both served as combat soldiers in the 7007th Battalion of the IDF’s 16th Brigade.
Following the deadly incident, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir ordered the establishment of a special team of experts to investigate the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
The investigative team will be headed by a brigadier general from the Ground Forces and will examine how the incident occurred and what measures can be implemented to prevent similar accidents in the future.
The IDF initially announced that Kali and Moalem had fallen in battle in the Gaza Strip. It later disclosed that their deaths resulted from the explosion of an IDF drone during operations in the enclave.
The military said the investigation would focus on drawing operational and safety lessons from the incident.
