A recent op-ed in the student paper endorsing George Washington University’s Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine (FSJP) dangerously misrepresents the reality of campus protests.
While portrayed as peaceful, these demonstrations endangered Jewish students, violated laws, and created an unsafe campus environment. Presenting such acts as “free speech” or “academic freedom” disregards the harm inflicted on students and undermines university principles.
Instances of intimidation and hostility at GW are well-documented. In recent weeks, pro-Hamas demonstrators occupied part of the campus, escalating to clashes that prompted police intervention.
Reports detail protesters chanting violent slogans outside President Ellen Granberg’s home, including “Guillotine, Guillotine,” adding to the distress felt by Jewish students. Additionally, these events disrupted academic life, with some professors canceling exams due to the chaos.
Antisemitism at GW has not been confined to this recent episode. In 2021, the desecration of a Torah scroll at a fraternity house further highlighted the vulnerability of Jewish students.
Recent flyers featuring profane language targeting Zionists and chants of “Intifada, revolution” at protests near the Jewish Student Center added to this climate of fear.
Faculty support of one-sided activism risks exacerbating division, contradicting their duty to foster inclusive, neutral learning spaces. This climate pressures students to conform or face marginalization.
It’s essential for the university to ensure that activism does not infringe on the safety and rights of any group.
Take Action Now: Email GWU President Granberg and GW Hatchet editors, urging firm measures to protect student safety, uphold standards of impartiality, and hold accountable those whose actions fuel division.

Subject Line: Urgent Action Needed to Safeguard Campus Safety and Inclusivity
Hello,
I am deeply concerned by recent campus activities that compromise the safety of Jewish students and the neutrality of university spaces.
The op-ed endorsing FSJP fails to address the realities of protests that endangered students and violated policies.
I urge the administration to take a balanced, strong stance to ensure safety and maintain an environment where all students can thrive without fear.
Sincerely,
