Israel’s leadership paused for a moment over the weekend to remember the 2,996 victims of the 9/11 terror attacks on New York City’s Twin Towers as its 20th anniversary was marked on Saturday.

President Isaac Herzog published a tribute on Friday for the 20th anniversary of 9/11, writing that “the Twin Towers came down and brought the skies crashing down with them. The world had changed.”

He recalls that he was at work at a Tel Aviv law firm at the time of the attacks.

“I remember watching the news with horror. Coming from a country where for the past few years, buses, cafés, and restaurants had been blown up by suicide bombers with a murderous ideology, claiming the lives of so many Israelis, the scenes looked familiar—yet the scale and magnitude were unprecedented,” he shared.

“Israel will stand forever with the United States, our greatest ally. We remember the thousands of victims, we embrace the orphans and widows, the bereaved parents, friends, and families, and also the survivors, and we salute the brave men and women who ran into the flames and rubble in the hope of saving human lives,” he stated.

“As peace-loving nations, we must ensure that our shared commitment to the defense of life and liberty triumph over any terrorists wishing to rain atrocities on our shores,” he underscored.

Foreign Minister Yair Lapid stated that “the horrific, murderous terror attacks that took place on September 11, 2001, changed the world.”

“As we mark 20 years since that terrible day, I want to send a message to the people of the United States and those who seek to harm them. An attack on America is an attack on us. America is our greatest friend and ally. An attack on our friends is an attack on us,” he stated.

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs will hold a special memorial ceremony with members from the US Embassy on Sunday.

“20 years after the attacks on 9/11, we remember the victims, send strength to their families and pay tribute to the heroes. We stand united with our friends in the United States and reaffirm our shared commitment to fighting terror and defending freedom,” Prime Minister Naftali Bennett wrote on Twitter.

Israel’s Ambassador to the US Gilad Erdan wrote that “20 years after the September11 attacks, we still live with the memory of that horrific tragedy and its aftermath. Israel remembers the nearly 3,000 victims of terror on that day, and we will always stand with the US against global terror.”
