Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem faced criticism after promoting a petition seeking to remove Jewish singer Pink as a UNICEF ambassador following her criticism of Macklemore’s “Free Palestine” message during Ed Sheeran’s Loop tour.
Bardem, who has been among Hollywood’s most vocal anti-Israel actors, reshared several posts to his Instagram Stories on Monday urging followers to sign a Change.org petition calling for Pink’s dismissal from the UNICEF role.
Pink had drawn backlash after objecting to Macklemore’s anti-Israel message during a performance. She shared a post from the @Stop_AntiSemitism account that read, “Awful, Jewish fans bought tickets to see Ed Sheeran sing last night in NJ, not to be ambushed by Macklemore’s anti-Israel propaganda…”
Comedian and actor Michael Rapaport responded by mocking Bardem as a “tattletale” and criticizing him for promoting a petition against Pink rather than confronting her directly.
“Javier Bar-Dumb Dumb initiated, signed & is promoting a petition to have singer PINK removed as a UNICEF Ambassador. He’s is Bullying a Proud Jewish Woman,” Rapaport wrote in an Instagram caption.
Actor Selma Blair joined the criticism in the comments, questioning why Pink’s position with UNICEF should be targeted over her remarks.
“Why would anyone want this great removed from unicef for human , humble and loving words? This makes no sense. I would think the terrifically talented actor man would worry about his own incredible life more. And allow love to flow. And listen to everybody. Not just his echo chamber. But alas,” Blair wrote.
Another commenter questioned Bardem’s attempt to have Pink removed, writing: “I’m not a big Pink fan…I like her music okay … who the hell is Bardem to cancel her? The left is eating itself.”
Bardem’s promotion of the petition follows the controversy surrounding Pink’s response to Macklemore’s appearance on Sheeran’s tour, where his “Free Palestine” message prompted her to amplify criticism that Jewish concertgoers had been subjected to anti-Israel messaging.
