According to international law, Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Jewish people. The Jewish people have an ancient connection to the city that no other nation possesses.
Israel designated Jerusalem as its capital in 1950, yet most countries maintain their embassies in Tel Aviv due to ongoing political debate with the Palestinians. This has given rise to an unprecedented situation whereby a sovereign state – Israel – is denied the diplomatic right to choose the location of its capital city.
When the State of Israel was established in 1948, the neighboring Arab armies attacked the Jewish state, and the Jordanians captured the Old City of Jerusalem.
Long before other religions appeared on the scene, the Jewish tradition teaches that Abraham attempted to sacrifice his child Isaac on the very spot of the present-day Temple Mount in Jerusalem. From this moment onward, Jerusalem would be of pivotal importance to the Jewish people.
The Palestinian Right of Return is not supported by international law nor precedent. And even in the one case where a right of return was attempted, in Bosnia it wasn't successful.
Aside from the religious and historical reasons, there are many security-related reasons for why Jerusalem should remain the undivided capital of the Jewish state.
According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), “Israel performs favorably in several measures of well-being, and ranks close to the average or higher in several topics in the Better Life Index.” For example, the average person in Israel earns “47,750 USD per year, more than the OECD average of 36,238 USD.” While having more money doesn’t guarantee happiness, the OECD does note that it does help to ensure a better standard of living. Additionally, the life expectancy rate in Israel stands at almost 82 years, two years higher than the OECD average of 80 years. This means that on the whole the Israeli medical system performs better than average.
No people that exist in the world today have an older claim to the Land of Israel than the Jewish people do. The Jebusites, Amorites, Canaanites, and Philistines do not exist in today’s world. According to the American archeologist Eric Cline, writing in Jerusalem Besieged, “Historians and archeologists have generally concluded that most if not all modern Palestinians are probably more closely related to the Arabs of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Jordan, and other countries than they are to the ancient Jebusites, Canaanites and Philistines.” He claims that all of the ancient inhabitants of the Land of Israel, except for the Jews, have been vanquished.
In 2009, I visited Ein Gedi with my older brother Daniel. My brother always was a nature lover, so I knew that he would really enjoy this majestic desert oasis. Indeed, we saw beautiful wild animals, lovely springs, gorgeous palm trees, and we explored rigorous yet amazing hiking trails. Yet to my great surprise, not only was Ein Gedi full of natural wonders, but also was a location rich in Jewish history. Indeed, upon exploring Ein Gedi, I discovered with my brother an ancient synagogue with striking mosaics dating back to the late Roman period, known as the period of the Mishna and the Talmud. I remember telling my brother that the existence of ancient historic synagogues such as this one is the ultimate proof that the Land of Israel belongs to the Jewish people and no one else!

Mazal Elijah and her family had a very difficult life. As members of the Baghdad Jewish community, Mazal’s mother suffered a lot during the Farhud Pogrom. Within 24 hours, 250 people died. Mazal claimed that some Arabs were decent and tried to save Jews from the Farhud, yet other Arabs behaved horribly and sought to do the same to the Jews of Iraq as Hitler did to the Jews in Europe, yet they were fortunately stopped by the British. Thus, upon getting married around that period of time, her husband was drafted into the army, thus forcing her to move in with her parents so that she wouldn’t get killed. Eventually, he managed to escape from the army, yet for a while things were very uncertain.
United with Israel is proud to introduce a new feature called "The Faces of Israel". Each week we will present you with stories about Israelis coming from different walks of life. We think you will enjoy learning about the lives of special people who are privileged to live in the Land of Israel. There is a long history of Jewish support for the civil liberties of African Americans which is reflected in members of the African American community supporting Jewish causes. For example in 2006, Cornetta Lane an African American at Wayne State University, even went as far as expressing this support by singing Hatikvah in front of an anti-Israel protester who claimed that Israel was a racist state. When Jewish students asked at the time why she sang Hatikvah, Cornetta replied that her pastor, Glen Plummer, explained that Jews significantly helped out African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement, and that Jews contributed significantly to both the NAACP and the Urban League, and were advisers to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Flora Cohen presently lives in Nahariyya, Israel. She has three children and 16 grandchildren. However, she was born and raised in Casablanca, Morocco. Flora was born and spent her childhood living under French colonial rule. Under French rule, Flora claims that Morocco was a modern European state, full of cafés. However, in other respects, the Moroccans did not enjoy the same opportunities that the Europeans did. Furthermore, living as part of the Jewish minority there was not easy, since being a Jew was a dirty word both in French and Arabic.
As we speak, anti-Israel activists across the globe are gearing up for or hosting Israel Apartheid Weeks on various college campuses, with the goal of delegitimizing the State of Israel. As an anti-Israel student group at American University announced, “The aim of IAW is to educate people about the nature of Israel as an apartheid system and to build support for the growing Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel.” While anti-Israel student groups like the Students for Justice in Palestine frequently make such statements, it is critical to remember that such assertions are nothing more than slander designed to harm Israel.
For decades, Jews have been immigrating to the State of Israel from all parts of the universe: From Poland, Morocco, Russia, Iraq, Argentina, Hungary, Egypt, Ethiopia and many other countries. A major part of Israel is the highly strategic and historically significant area known as the Golan Heights. Israel annexed the area during a war with Syria in 1981, yet the Israel’s rightful possession of this land is still not fully acknowledged by the international community.
Dr. Tawfiq Hamid, an Egyptian who was formerly active in the Islamist terror group Al Gamaa Al Islamiyya, has decided to condemn radical Islam after he witnessed how brutal such an ideology is upon being requested to bury a police officer alive. He claimed that his conscious as a human being would not permit for him to commit such a brutal and barbaric act of violence. As a result of him becoming an outspoken critic of radical Islam, the Al Qamaa Al Islamiyya has threatened to kill him, but Hamid remains undeterred, still committed to getting his voice heard, claiming that the Islamists could kill his body, but not his voice. He warns that Israel should not make any concessions to radical Islam, for the Islamists would view such an action as weakness and it would encourage them to engage in further aggression.
An inscription found in the nineteenth century in one of the two great synagogues of Baram stated, “Peace be upon this place and upon all of the places of Israel.” It is currently on display at the Louvre in Paris. While one of the two synagogues of Baram is no more, the remnants of the other ancient Byzantine style synagogue are still there for all to see to this day. To the contrary of what popular myths claim, Jews continued to live in Israel after the brutal suppression of the Bar Kokhba Revolt in 135 CE. However, the center of Jewish life in Israel transferred from the Jerusalem area to the Galilee. Following the Bar Kokhba Revolt, 58 Jewish communities continued to exist in the Galilee, among them the Jewish community of Baram.
Many pro-Palestine activists and members of the international community falsely have claimed that Israel has violated the Fourth Geneva Convention. For example, a UN Human Rights Council panel has declared that Israel building Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria violates the Fourth Geneva Convention. Christine Chanet, the French judge who headed this U.N. inquiry, claimed, “To transfer its own population into an occupied territory is prohibited because it is an obstacle to the exercise of the right to self-determination.” Yet any careful examination of international law would establish that Judea and Samaria, as well as East Jerusalem, are not occupied territories and that the Geneva Convention spoke of forced transfers, such as what the Nazis did, not the voluntary transfers that Israel engages in.
The Israel Museum, located near the Knesset Building in Jerusalem, houses some of humanity’s most amazing archaeological treasures, dating from the cave man up till the second Muslim conquest of the Holy Land following the Crusades. Indeed, one of the most amazing things about Israel is that the country played a central role in human history from its earliest beginnings. Inside the Israel Museum, one can catch a glimpse for how the people who inhabited Israel lived in the early Stone Age; they were scavengers and hunters who lived off the land, lacking advanced tools. These hunter-gatherers made up two types of human populations: modern humans and Neanderthals.
According to Freedom House, Israel is the only state ranked free in the Middle East region and which has upheld democratic principles when tested.
According to the Israeli historian Benny Morris, in ancient times, “The core of the Jewish state was the hill country of Judea, Samaria, and Galilee.” Areas in mainland Israel such as Caesarea, Jaffa, and Ashkelon were centers of paganism in the Hellenistic and Roman periods and did not make up the heart of biblical Israel. Yet despite these historical facts, too many Jews support relinquishing Israeli control over Judea & Samaria, even though the area is richer in Jewish history than Arab history.
According to Palestinian Authority Minister of Religious Affairs, Mahmoud Al Habbash, all of Jerusalem and the Western Wall, otherwise known as the Kotel, are “the sole right of the Palestinians” for “no person beside Muslims ever used it (Western Wall) as a place of worship throughout all of history until the ominous Balfour Declaration was issued in 1917.” He furthermore claimed that “Israeli Prime Minister] Netanyahu's recent statements concerning the occupation's (i.e., Israel's) ownership of the Western Wall are nothing but nonsense and an attempt to manipulate both history and geography, and are worthless from a religious, historical, or legal point of view.”
Israeli researchers, upon studying the effects that planting olive trees has had upon the Israeli desert ecosystem, have discovered that planting olive trees in arid areas has numerous environmental benefits. In addition to producing fabulous olive oil, olive trees provide shade for wild animals such as the migratory birds that fly through Israel; clean the air of pollutants such as CO2, a major cause for global warming; function as an excellent waste disposal sites for sewage that can be converted into compost; and work to fight off invasive species such as the jackal. The study was conducted jointly by the Faculty of Agriculture at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Agricultural Research Organization.

Thirty-eight years ago, Palestinian terrorists attacked a school in Ma'alot and murdered 22 Israeli school children. It was so different than the horrible massacre that just took place in the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, where 20 children and 7 adults were murdered. I have no words to ease the pain of parents who have lost children, those who have lost their beloved relatives - not then, not now, not ever. In Ma'alot, we knew the motive - it was hatred and a belief in a radical interpretation of Islam that allowed, encouraged, and blessed murdering infidels, even if they were children. Perhaps especially if they were children. What we understood in Ma'alot, we cannot comprehend in this tragedy.
Despite mainstream media reports of a siege on Gaza during Operation Pillar of Defense, Israeli immigrant soldier Nira Lee reported that she called all of the major organizations in Gaza that import medical supplies and had asked them what they needed urgently. When the Keren Shalom Crossing needed to be closed for one night because of a rocket attack, Nira claimed that she and her team worked overtime to figure out how to get medical supplies into Gaza regardless.
In 1947, there were over 130,000 Jews in Iraq. As of 2008, Baghdad, which used to be a third Jewish, had less than 10 Jews, with only a few more scattered in the Kurdish areas of Iraq.
Palestinian society revolves around remembering what Israel was like before she became a state, rather than creating something for themselves anew. For this reason, they are obsessed with a right of return. This Palestinian position is one of the main obstacles to achieving peace.

Yesterday, I went, for my very first time, to the Upper Golan. I accompanied Boruch Len, a master of photography, and we set forth to explore (and document) some of the Golan’s grandeur. The first place on our list was the huge Nimrod Fortress, an old castle built over a 46-year span in the mid 13th century by the local ruling Arabs (construction was started by the nephew of Saladin – the arch-enemy of the Crusaders). The Nimrod Fortress happens to be the largest Crusade-era fortress/castle in Israel and was used in the filming of the Academy award-nominated film Beaufort, replacing the actual Beaufort castle which is in Lebanon, out of reach for Israeli filmmakers. Just to point out, this was a trip heavily influenced by photography – however, the weather made consistent photography tricky. The clouds and sun played their games throughout the day and so the following pictures will appear as if taken on separate days but have really been simply subjected to finicky weather.
The Oasis of Ein Gedi, a site mentioned many times in Tanach (Bible), is one of Israel’s most visited sites. If you have been to Israel, you have probably hiked its desert rocks, swam in its year round water streams, and watched as families of Ibex (antelope) cross your path without warning. Today however, we will venture off the beaten track, and explore one of Ein Gedi’s lesser known sites: the Ancient, Talmudic Synagogue.

Yehuda Z. Blum, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations had this to say on June 11, 1979: “A corollary of the inalienable right of the Jewish people to its Land is the right to live in any part of Eretz Yisrael, including Judea and Samaria which are an integral part of Eretz Yisrael. Jews are not foreigners anywhere in the Land of Israel.
A monumental synagogue building dating to the Late Roman period (around the 4th-5th centuries CE) has been discovered in archaeological excavations at Huqoq in the Galilee. Huqoq is an ancient Jewish village located approximately two to three miles west of Capernaum and Migdal (Magdala).
