Ecuador’s president, responding to a critic who called him a fascist, tweeted “Heil Hitler.” Why he chose the Nazi greeting in this particular case is unclear.

Ecuador President Rafael Correa on Thursday tweeted “Heil Hitler,” the infamous Nazi greeting.

Correa, who has led the South American country since 2007 and has 2.12 million followers on Twitter, tweeted the objectionable Nazi greeting when responding to a tweet by a critic who called him a “fascist.”

It is not clear what Correa meant by the comment.

News sites report that he is known for making controversial remarks on Twitter.

Correa has also expressed a negative stance towards Israel and Jewish issues. He canceled a scheduled visit to Israel last summer in protest over the IDF’s Operation Protective Edge in Gaza to eradicate Hamas’ terror infrastructure.

“Obviously, after these events, we have canceled the visit,” Correa said at the time.

In 2012, Correa compared the 1994 bombing of a Buenos Aires AMIA Jewish center, which killed 85 people, to NATO’s bombings in Libya in a campaign to oust former dictator and terror supporter Muammar Gaddafi.

“I know that case that is so painful for Argentine history. But look how many people died in the NATO bombing of Libya. I respect the Argentine case very much, but we should see where the real danger lies,” Correa said in relation to the terror attack on the Jewish center that was reportedly carried out by Hezbollah under Iranian orders.
