After almost 14 years of civil war, the Syrian government collapsed early Sunday, as rebel forces seized control of Damascus, AP reported.

A statement aired on Syrian state television said that President Bashar Assad had been overthrown and all those being held in jails had been released.

Hours before, a Syrian opposition war monitor reported that Assad had left the country for an undisclosed location, fleeing rebels who said they had entered Damascus.

Reuters quoted two Syrian sources as saying there was a very high probability that Assad had been killed in a plane crash after his plane took a surprise U turn and disappeared off the map.

In the wake of the fall of the Syrian Assad Regime, Lt.-Col. Avichay Adraee, the Israel Defense Forces’ Arabic Language Spokesperson, announced that Israel has deployed forces in its buffer zone with Syria.

“In light of the events in Syria and based on an assessment of the situation and the possibility of armed men entering the buffer zone, the IDF deployed forces in the buffer zone and at several necessary defensive points in order to ensure the security of the residents of the Golan Heights towns and the citizens of the State of Israel,” Adraee tweeted.

“We emphasize that the IDF does not intervene in the events taking place in Syria,” Adraee added.
