For These Israelis, Yom Kippur is Just Another Day Without Food

(Colel Chabad)

Israel has opened its economy locally but borders remain closed. The tourist industry is 20% of Israel’s economy, so for many, life under COVID-19 remains difficult.

Yom Kippur is a fast day in the Jewish faith. The holiday, which begins at sundown just ten days after the Jewish New Year of Rosh Hashanah, is a day of judgment. On that day, the decree for the year to come is confirmed and finalized by G-d.

And while most people in Israel have difficulty fasting, for others, it’s becoming their daily routine.

That’s because although Israel is recovering nicely from three economy-crippling lockdowns this past year, there are still many throughout the Jewish State that are struggling to bounce back.

The hardest hit are those in the travel industry such as hotel employees, tour guides, and souvenir shop owners. That’s because, despite its high vaccination rate, Jerusalem still hasn’t opened to tourists.

This subsect of society are the people you don’t hear about on the news. You won’t see them mentioned as the government brags about Israel’s impressive economic “recovery.”

Luckily for them, there is one organization that ensures that those who have fallen between the cracks, no longer go to bed with an empty stomach.

That organization is Colel Chabad.

Colel Chabad specializes in locating Israeli families suffering from food insecurity and provides them with the sustenance they need to get back on their feet.

During the High Holiday season, Colel Chabad is kicking it into high gear with the goal of ensuring that not one Israeli widow, orphan, or Holocaust survivor or anyone in need, will go hungry during the High Holy Days.

That’s why Colel Chabad is now on a mission to locate and vet the families in Israel who need food the most and provide warm meals. This will enable them to celebrate High Holidays including Rosh Hashannah, the break-fast after Yom Kippur, and Sukkot with dignity.

But they can’t do it alone. All of this effort requires money. And that’s where you can enter the picture.

Colel Chabad is currently accepting donations from friends of Israel worldwide. With your help, a hungry Israeli family can enjoy the food that G-d blessed the earth with.

This is the time of year when the Lord judges our actions and decides how much money we’ll make this coming year. What better investment is there than charity in Israel?! It even says so in the Book of Proverbs:

He who is generous to the poor makes a loan to Hashem; He will repay him his due. (Proverbs 19:17)
