Dark Horse Comics canceled plans to publish Holocaust scholar Dr. Rafael Medoff’s graphic novel “Cartoonists Against the Holocaust” after a dispute over an editor’s push to add criticism of Israel and U.S. immigration policies to the book, Ynet reported.
Medoff said Craig Yoe, an imprint editor for Yoe Books, which distributes through Dark Horse, sought to include language accusing Israel of “war crimes” and drawing comparisons between U.S. immigration detention policies and concentration camps.
Medoff rejected the additions as “factually inaccurate” and said they would turn a World War II history book into a vehicle for contemporary politics.
Medoff described the demands as “antisemitic bullying.”
Dark Horse previously published two of Medoff’s books, “Whistleblowers” and “Cartoonists Against Racism,” without incident.
Medoff and the Jewish civil rights organization StandWithUs said the dispute developed after Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, when Yoe began pressing for criticism of Israel in the new volume.
In a September 1, 2025, email, Yoe said he had “thought long and hard” about placing a separate editor’s note elsewhere in the book without changing its existing introduction.
Yoe wrote that Israel was led by a prime minister against whom “the world’s top war crimes court has issued warrants for his alleged acts of war crimes and crimes against humanity.” He also criticized billions of dollars in U.S. military assistance to Israel for bombs.
“There are no concentration camps in America, and it’s not a Nazi country,” Medoff told Yoe. “Misusing the term ‘concentration camps’ diminishes the suffering that was experienced by the Jewish victims of the real concentration camps in the 1930s and 1940s.”
Medoff said linking Israel to crimes against humanity while invoking the Holocaust effectively accused the country of genocide. Efforts to reach a compromise failed and the project was canceled.
Medoff maintains the book was dropped because he refused to criticize Israel and U.S. policies. Dark Horse legal counsel disputed that account, saying the decision was based solely on financial concerns and repeated scheduling delays by Yoe.
