ISIS’ New Weapon: Medieval Scorpion Bombs

Islamic State terrorists have gone completely medieval, even with their weaponry. Scorpion bombs are in vogue again.

The Islamic State (IS or ISIS) terror organization has resorted to using medieval weaponry in its battles in Iraq. They are reportedly dropping “scorpion bombs” – canisters with hundreds of live scorpions meant to cause disarray among their enemies – Israel’s Ma’ariv reports.

The bombs, environmentally friendly, are used mainly as a psychological tactic. They land on villages and cause panic among innocent civilians.

This use of medieval weaponry falls in line with ISIS’ aspiration to push the world back into the seventh century, to the time of the advent of Islam.

Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, ex-head of chemical and biological weapons for NATO who recently returned from Iraq, told the UK Mirror: “It’s madness. ISIS has improvised devices to launch them. They promote the fact that they are doing it and it creates panic. Scorpions are robust – even if they are launched a couple of miles, when the canister breaks thousands are flung out and start crawling all around. Some scorpions are very poisonous but the main thing is creating fear.”

World’s Oldest Biological Weapon

The scorpion bomb was first used by residents of the region against the Roman legions many centuries ago. Its use was documented in 198 CE, when scorpions were stuffed into pots and thrown at the invading armies. The defending forces eventually repelled the attacking Romans, partially thanks to this creative use of the local vermin. A historian researching the issue called it the “the world’s oldest biological weapon.”

Meanwhile, the International Business Times reports that U.S.-led coalition forces continue to launch airstrikes on ISIS targets.

In a CNN report, American President Barack Obama spoke before military troops inside a New Jersey airplane hangar and reported that the U.S. was “hammering” ISIS by blasting supply chains and disrupting the terror group’s chain of command.
