Israel’s is expanding its support for security systems used by the UN’s peacekeeping mission in Central African Republic.
The United Nations (UN) approved an Israeli plan to expand its technological support for the UN’s peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic and help improve security in the country.
The UN Under-Secretary-General for Field Support, Atul Khare, on Monday signed an agreement with Israel to extend a technology pilot project designed to improve security in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).
Since 2015, Israel has contributed both static and mobile observation systems to MINUSCA.
“These capacities have proven highly successful in increasing situational awareness and preventing outbreaks of violence, including during the visit of Pope Francis, the election process in Bangui (CAR’s capital) and many other events associated with potential security threats,” the letter said.
Following a detailed evaluation process, the UN’s mission has approved Israel’s proposal to expand and upgrade its existing observation system, which will include measures to fully integrate technological solutions into the mission’s day to day operations.
“The Department of Field Support (DFS) thanks the Government of Israel for its continued support to UN peacekeeping,” Khare’s letter concluded.
DFS is a UN body dedicated to supporting peacekeeping and political missions.
The Central African Republic has been in a state of civil war for 13 years. The Central African Republic Bush War began in 2004 and, despite a peace treaty in 2007 and another in 2011, renewed fighting broke out between various factions in December 2012, leading to ethnic and religious cleansing of the Muslim minority and massive population displacement in 2013 and 2014.
MINUSCA has been in the country since 2014 with the mission to protect civilians under Chapter VII of the UN Charter. As of 2016, the UN has more than 10,000 troops on the ground in the African republic.
