Israel was crowned as the leading force in 2014 in the development of clean technologies, beating 40 other countries and receiving the prestigious and highest ranking.

The annual Global Cleantech Innovation Index, compiled by the Cleantech Group, the World Wildlife Foundation and the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth (Tillväxtverket), ranked 40 countries for their potential for entrepreneurial clean-tech start-ups. The report takes a 10-year look down the line and ranks each country on a basis of 15 different indicators.

Clean technology includes recycling, renewable energy through the use of wind power, solar power, biomass, hydropower and biofuels, electric motors, green chemistry, greywater and many other appliances that are energy efficient. It is a means to create electricity and fuels, with a smaller environmental footprint and minimized pollution.

Israeli Culture, Education and ‘Chutzpah’

The Index writes that “Israel topped the 2014 index, with its relative outperformance on the measure of start-up companies per capita being a key reason that it did so. The country generates the culture, education and ‘chutzpah’ necessary to breed innovation, plus it has the survival instincts to manage a resource-constrained geography.”

The report stipulates that “Israel places first on the overall index, with extremely high evidence of emerging cleantech innovation drivers. The country has demonstrated the greatest density of high-impact cleantech start-ups, as well as a high level of business sophistication and entrepreneurial attitudes, strong venture capital activity and a good number of environmental patents.”

Israel’s government was also lauded for its increased supportive policies and its funding of cleantech projects.

Small Country – Big Industry

According to Energydigital.com, “Israel is considered the definitive cleantech innovation archetype for both embedding entrepreneurial spirit into its educational system and into its society’s everyday norms as well as for predisposing its start-ups to resource innovation—as a survival mechanism to overcome resource constraints and energy dependency. Given the size of its economy, Israel has a large amount of cleantech companies and is still growing. Over the past two years, Israel has had an incredible amount of start-ups voted into the Global Cleantech 100 There is overwhelming evidence that it will remain a leader in the cleantech industry in the next decade.”

Israel’s cleantech projects are globally renowned, with innovative ideas such as powering entire buildings through the use of solar panels, converting wind into electricity, new technologies for clean water and many other inventions that are making the world cleaner and more energy-efficient.
