Israel’s Ministry of Agriculture will invest over 3 million Shekels ($800,000) to encourage growers to plant garlic in the in the country this fall.

The Minister of Agriculture, Avi Dichter, said he decided to promote support for the garlic industry before reaching agreements with the Ministry of Finance on the model of direct support for garlic growers, with the aim of preventing the industry’s eventual demise. The ministry will help the growers who decide to plant garlic in the coming week.

In the past year and a half, the local cultivation areas decreased by more than 50% and the number of growers was reduced from 60 to 20.

Minister of Agriculture, Avi Dichter charged that the complete cancellation of the customs duty on garlic in March 2022, during the time of the previous government, caused an almost complete collapse of the garlic industry.

“I have no doubt that this was not the intention of the previous government, but it was the result of the step they took,” he said. “If we had not taken this step, Israeli garlic would have become a piece of history. We will continue to strengthen local agriculture in the country, encourage Continue high-quality and fresh local production, and at the same time create an opportunity for future growth for the benefit of food security for all of us.”
