Jerusalem serves as a “unifying city” among all religions and will never be divided, Mayor Barkat stated.

Jerusalem is a “unifying city” among all religions and will never be divided, the city’s Mayor Nir Barkat stated.

Addressing a special dinner for the Christian Media Summit in Jerusalem on Monday, Barkat noted that “in one square kilometer of Jerusalem, you will find more synagogues, churches and mosques than anywhere around the world.”

“The city of Jerusalem will never be divided,” Barkat vowed, explaining that the holy city’s role is to “accommodate all – secular, traditional, religious, from all religions.”

Barkat also discussed the cultural diversity of Israel’s capital and the rapid and continuing growth of Jerusalem’s hi-tech and innovation sector.

“Jerusalem tripled the amount of high-tech companies in the past few years with an amazing growth. Jerusalem is looking into the future,” he declared.

The dinner was hosted by Mike Evans, CEO of the Friends of Zion Museum, who elaborated on the strong connection between the Christian community and the holy city.

The first Christian Media Summit is taking place this week in Jerusalem under the auspices of Minister of Jerusalem Affairs and Heritage Zeev Elkin and the Israel Government Press Office (GPO).

The summit coincides with the 50th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem, the eternal capital of Israel. The summit’s goal is to foster a better understanding and strengthen the friendship between Christians worldwide and the State of Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who addressed the summit on Sunday, lauded the close ties between Israel and Christians around the world. “Israel has no better friends – I mean that – no better friends in the world than the Christian communities around the world,” he stated.

Netanyahu underscored the city’s accessibility to members of all faiths, saying that “you are joining us as we celebrate 50 years since the Holy City was liberated and united; 50 years of religious freedom for all. You know that because you walk around, you go to the holy sites, you go to the churches, others go to the mosques, and you know this is a free city.”
