Israel transferred the remains of 91 terrorists to the Palestinian Authority on May 31. Of this total 79 terrorists were transported to Ramallah and 12 to Gaza. In Israel this was seen as part of a good will gesture by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.
In Ramallah Palestinian leaders including Abbas and Palestinian PM Salam Fayyad glorified the terrorists.
The terrorists, including a number of suicide bombers, were responsible for dozens of attacks which claimed hundreds of Israeli lives. In Ramallah they were lauded as “shahids” (martyrs).
“Our martyrs are now among us after being in our hearts, in our minds, and in our veins,” said Tayeb Abd Al-Rahim, secretary-general of Abbas’s office in a speech broadcast on Palestinian television.
“We did not forget them for a moment, we will never forget them, and we will always remain faithful to their vow. . . Oh brothers [martyrs], your souls now hover above us and say to us: Follow in our path, stick to the obligation that is incumbent upon us and we are sure that you will be fulfilling this obligation and following this path,” Al-Rahim said.
PA Mufti Muhammad Hussein called the terrorists an “elite group of martyrs.” Several months ago he publicly called for killing Jews.
In his speech in Ramallah the mufti continued: “Our people, headed by the Palestinian leadership, welcome these martyrs with great honor. . . [W]e still have a people that . . . will spare no sacrifice for this blessed land, for this homeland, for Jerusalem and the holy places, and for every inch of the pure land of beloved Palestine. Honored brothers, this is a great event: The souls of the noble martyrs envelop us, and their souls tell us to follow in their path.”
In Gaza the Hamas government gave the terrorists’ remains full military honors including 21-gun salutes.
This was a good education for Israel to learn more about its “peace partners”. If this is what the “moderate” leaders believe, one can only imagine what the “extremists” are saying…
