Israeli Air Force (IAF) strikes targeting Iranian sites in Syria since April have caused “significant casualties” in the ranks of the Iranian forces and their loyal militias, killing 113 Iranians and members of their proxy terror groups, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported this week.
SOHR said it documented five months of Israeli strikes in Syria and Lebanon against Hezbollah targets at several locations.
The airstrikes killed at least 28 members the Syrian regime forces, according to news reports, while SOHR has documented the killing of 40 members of the regime forces and the militiamen loyal to them, including two officers.
Based on information obtained from “reliable sources,” SOHR said the numbers of Iranian troops and their loyal militias of Lebanese, Iraqi, Afghan, Iranian and Asian nationalities, are estimated at more than 32,000 non-Syrian fighters.
Thousands have been killed in action since the start of the Syrian revolution in March 2011. At least 7,806 members of the non-Syrian rebel groups, mostly from the Shia sect, who fight under the banner of the IRGC and their militias of Afghans, Iraqis and Asians, have been killed over the past seven years, in addition to at least 1,650 members of the Hezbollah terror group.
Israel Works Tirelessly to Secure Its Borders
Earlier this month, the IDF revealed that it has carried out some 200 strikes in Syria over the past year and a half. According to the IDF, the attacks made use of over 800 missiles and bombs that were dropped on selected sites, mostly from fighter jets.
Israel considers the prevention of an Iranian military buildup in Syria and the transfer of advanced weapons to the Hezbollah terror group a central objective.
Speaking in August, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that “our enemies know very well what Israel is capable of doing. They are familiar with our policy. Whoever tries to hurt us – we hurt them.”
“I am not spouting slogans,” he added. “I am describing a persistent, clear and determined policy. This is our policy. It is backed by appropriate deployment, equipment, preparedness and – in the hour of need – appropriate orders.”
In comments aimed specifically at the Islamic Republic, he said, “We are working to prevent Iran from establishing a military presence in Syria. We will not relent in pursuit of this goal just as we did not relent in bringing about the cancellation of the bad nuclear agreement with Iran, a goal which was seen as impossible when I put it on the international agenda for the first time several years ago.
“In the diplomatic sphere, we will continue to apply pressure on the dangerous, extremist regime in Iran. Just yesterday we saw the fruit of this pressure in remarks by the Iranian president who said that many among the Iranian people have lost hope in the future and strength of Iran due to the resumption of economic sanctions.
“In the military sphere, the IDF will continue to take strong and determined action against Iran’s attempts to station forces and advanced weapons systems in Syria. No agreement between Syria and Iran will deter us; neither will any threat deter us.
“Whoever threatens us with destruction puts himself in similar danger, and in any case will not achieve his goal,” Netanyahu affirmed.
