A remarkable gift arrived in Israel for the Rosh Hashana, Near Year’s, holiday. It is a wall tapestry which researchers believe was woven by Jews in the Lodz Ghetto during the Holocaust. Yori Yaalon of Yisrael Hayom reports that the tapestry contains a New Year’s greeting for the Hebrew year 5702. This corresponds to the secular year 1941-1942. Researchers from the Shem Olam Institute say that it was most likely clandestinely woven by Jews who worked in the Lodz Ghetto carpet factory.
The tapestry was discovered after the war by a Polish woman who moved to Lodz from a nearby village in 1945. The woman’s daughter told researchers that “The area was quite abandoned. My mother moved among empty houses and collected furniture and items that had been left behind. In one of the apartments, in the corner of the room, she found a wall tapestry and since then it has hung in our house. Today, my mother is old and the tapestry could fall apart, so she asked that I give it to you, the Jews.”
Rabbi Avraham Krieger, director of the Shem Olam Institute in Kfar Haroeh which has put the tapestry on display described the symbolism of the artwork. “…one can find in it special motifs, including a black spider and a spider web representing the Nazis, and a symbolic yellow star against a blue-white background, a symbol of hope.”
