Syrian Shell Slams into Israel; IDF Retaliates

Smoke rises near Quneitra Crossing as it seen from the Golan Heights in the Israeli side .

The fighting in Syria has spilled over into Israel again. The IDF returned fire.

Sirens went off in the Golan Heights on Thursday afternoon as shells were fired into Israel from Syria. The shells fell in open spaces near an Israeli community in the northern Golan. No injuries nor damage were reported.

The IDF is searching the area for any additional rockets that may have fallen on the Israeli side of the border.

The army retaliated by firing a rocket at the position from which the Syrian shells had been fired. An accurate hit was registered. An IDF spokesman announced that it views the Syrian army responsible for all fire emanating from Syria.

Another Spillover from the Syrian Civil War

It is estimated that the Syrian shells were a spillover from the heavy fighting between President Bashar al-Assad’s forces and various rebel groups who are struggling for control of the Quneitra region.

The heavy fighting has been going on for several days, and a number of projectiles have fallen inside Israeli territory since the launch of the rebel offensive.

Syrian opposition sources stated that the fighting is focused on the southern outskirts of Quneitra, since they had fought in the city itself and have taken over the border crossing that leads into Israel.
