UN Official Who Blacklisted Israel Engaged With Antisemitic Account

The post surfaced one day after a public confrontation between Frazier and Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon.

A senior United Nations official came under criticism from Israel after responding on social media to an account that shared an image depicting an Israeli flag bearing a swastika, prompting accusations of tolerance for antisemitic content from Israel’s ambassador to the U.N.

Vanessa Frazier, the U.N. secretary-general’s representative on children and armed conflict, replied Saturday night to the account after it posted the image comparing Israel to Nazi Germany.

In her response, Frazier wrote: “I look forward to constructive engagement — together we can eliminate this scourge and do justice to all victims and survivors.”

The exchange surfaced one day after a public confrontation between Frazier and Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon during events marking the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict.

During the exchange, Danon accused Frazier of attempting to interrupt his remarks.

“You will be quiet because I am speaking now,” he told her. “You spoke, now I am speaking. Shame on you. You are part of the persecution of Israel. Shame on you. You can leave.”

Frazier was involved in the process that resulted in Israel being placed on a United Nations list of countries and armed groups credibly suspected of perpetrating sexual violence in conflict zones.

Israel has rejected those allegations. The country is also pursuing a defamation lawsuit against The New York Times over an opinion article alleging extreme sexual abuse.

Regarding allegations of sexual atrocities committed by Hamas against Israeli civilians during the Oct. 7, 2023, attack, the United Nations has said there are “reasonable grounds to believe” such acts took place in multiple locations.

Following the disclosure of Frazier’s social media response, Danon renewed his criticism.

“Yesterday she tried to silence me in the UN hall,” Danon said. “Today it turns out she is also corresponding with accounts that spread antisemitic content and compare Israel to Nazis. Anyone who shows tolerance for antisemitism cannot present themselves as a defender of human rights. The mask is off.”
