US Launches Major Strikes on Iran After Missile Attack

The United States launched a major wave of airstrikes against Iran late Wednesday, targeting dozens of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) sites in retaliation for Tehran’s attempted ballistic missile attack on U.S. forces in Jordan a day earlier.

The strikes marked the first U.S. attacks on Iran in five days, ending a brief lull after 13 consecutive days of American strikes against Iranian military targets.

According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation began at 8 p.m. ET and concluded around 10 p.m. ET, striking military command centers, missile and drone facilities, coastal surveillance and defense sites, and maritime capabilities across Iran.

CENTCOM said the operation was intended to further reduce threats posed by Iran and its proxies to American forces, commercial shipping, and U.S. allies in the Gulf.

“The strikes are a powerful response to yesterday’s attempted Iranian attacks on U.S. forces based in the Middle East,” CENTCOM said.

The operation came after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched multiple ballistic missiles at U.S. military facilities in Jordan on Tuesday in what American officials described as a surprise attack. All of the missiles were intercepted, and no casualties were reported.

Early Thursday, Jordan’s military announced it had intercepted five additional missiles launched from Iran, with state-run Petra News Agency reporting no casualties.

President Donald Trump had vowed a forceful response earlier Wednesday.

“We’re going to” beat the f—ing s— out of them,” Trump told Fox News chief foreign correspondent Trey Yingst.

“We’ll be hitting them hard,” he added. “They’re going to get a beating.”

Later Wednesday, Trump told reporters that Iran had fired five ballistic missiles at U.S. forces.

“They send five 8,000-mile-per-hour missiles at us, and fortunately, we had our people operating the greatest equipment in the world, namely the Patriot system,” Trump said.

“Think of it. Five missiles going 8,600 miles an hour, big ones coming right at us, and all five were shut down.”

Asked whether the United States would continue responding militarily to Iranian attacks, Trump replied, “Will I always hit back? Pretty much yes.”

Elsewhere in the region, tensions remained high. The Kuwaiti army said an Iranian strike hit a building belonging to a Chinese company in northern Kuwait, killing one employee and causing extensive structural damage.

In Egypt, officials confirmed that a fire aboard two vessels at the Mediterranean port of Damietta on Wednesday was caused by a drone strike during cargo operations at a liquefied natural gas terminal. No injuries were reported, and no group has claimed responsibility.

If confirmed as a deliberate attack, it would mark the first strike on Egyptian infrastructure since the regional war began and a significant expansion of hostilities into Mediterranean energy infrastructure.

More than 50,000 U.S. service members remain deployed throughout the Middle East, with CENTCOM saying American forces remain “highly vigilant, focused, lethal, and ready.”
