The State of Israel will soon celebrate its 70th birthday. Learn about the history of its national anthem, “Hatikva,” the song that literally means “The Hope.”
Ninety-nine years ago the British Empire banned a song with a simple message that spoke of hope and a deep yearning to be a free people in the Land of Israel. This song endured as a statement of hope for the Jewish people as well as a last cry of defiance among those condemned to a horrific fate.
Since the establishment of the State of Israel 70 years ago, it has been the country’s national anthem.
“As long as the Jewish spirit yearns deep in the heart, with eyes turned toward the East, looking toward Zion, then our hope, the two-thousand-year-old-hope will not be lost: To be a free people in our land, the land of Zion, and Jerusalem.”
