When David Ben-Gurion declared the founding of the modern State of Israel on May 14, 1948, Rebecca Affachiner came up with a creative way to show her patriotism.
After a lifetime of activism, at the age of 50, Rebecca Affachiner left a successful career behind to help strengthen her Jewish brethren in what was then known as Palestine. She founded the Palestine Society for Crippled Children, which would become the leading pediatric rehabilitation hospital in Israel.
In May of 1948 when the foundation of the State of Israel was declared, Rebecca was trapped in her apartment in besieged Jerusalem, but that didn’t stop her from showing her patriotism.
The flag that Rebecca Affachiner created from what materials she had on hand has been donated to the Ben Gurion University by her long time friend, Ezra Gorodesky.
