The US State Department has been required by law, for more than two decades, to move the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.
The Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995 funded the relocation of the United States Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
The act required the move to be made no later than May 31, 1999, and was even supposed to withhold part of the State Department’s budget until the move was actualized.
The act also called for Jerusalem to remain an undivided city and for it to be recognized as the capital of the State of Israel, just as all other nations are given the right to have their chosen capitals recognized.
Despite passage, Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama all refused to implement the law.
President Donald Trump’s historic announcement on December 6, 2017, to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and begin the relocation of the embassy, finally brought the executive branch in line with pertinent legislation, as explained by Daniel Pomerantz in this clip.
