In this week’s Torah portion, Chukat, God commands Moses to speak to a rock. Why?

In the desert, the Jewish People were suffering from a lack of water and complained bitterly to Moses.

As the bible tells us, God commanded Moses to speak to a certain rock and ask for water, but instead he hit the rock.

For disobeying the commandment, Moses was punished and forbidden from entering the Land of Israel.

What is the message here? Why dod God command Moses to speak to a rock?
