United with Israel

The Czech Republic is United with Israel!

The Czech Republic was the only country within Europe who supported Israel by voting against accepting Palestine as a non-member state of the UN General Assembly, giving the Palestinians a status similar to the Vatican. Along with the United States, Israel, Canada, Panama, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, and Palau, the Czech Republic was one of the nine countries on the entire planet who took a stand supporting Israel last week at the United Nations.

Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu thanked the Czechs for their courageous stance, asserting that he plans to travel to Prague to personally thank Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas. Netanyahu furthermore proclaimed: “The history of Israel and the Czech Republic has taught us that one must cling to the truth even if the majority is not with you.” Netanyahu’s comment refers to how the free world during World War II agreed to sacrifice the Sudetenland of the Czech Republic in the vain hope of appeasing Hitler. This decision turned out to be catastrophic, for appeasement merely encouraged Hitler to invade more territories that didn’t belong to him.

As former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon asserted in 2001, “Israel will not be Czechoslovakia. I turn to the western democracies, first and foremost the leader of the free world, the United States. Do not repeat the dreadful mistake of 1938, when the enlightened democracies of Europe decided to sacrifice Czechoslovakia for the sake of a temporary, convenient solution. Don’t try to appease the Arabs at our expense. We will not accept this. Israel will not be Czechoslovakia.”

The Czech Republic has a long history of supporting Israel. When Israel was fighting for her independence, it was the Czechs who in defiance of a UN embargo sent Israel the weapons she needed to become an independent state. While diplomatic ties were severed due to the Cold War, Czech-Israeli relations have flourished since the collapse of communism. “Israel has no better friend in Europe than the Czech Republic,” Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu proclaimed. Due to an historical affinity, Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas claimed, “We’ve got a special feeling for Israel’s situation—that of a small nation surrounded by enemies.”

Dear Prime Minister Petr Necas,

As a supporter of the State of Israel, I would like to thank you for taking a stand for Middle Eastern peace by uniting with Israel against the Palestinians recent violation of the Oslo Agreements at the UN General Assembly. As Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu stated, “Your vote must serve as an example for all those who support peace, which can be achieved only via direct negotiations without preconditions.”

I very much appreciate that the Czech Republic took this courageous stance despite the fact that they were the only country within Europe to do so. Furthermore, I would like to reiterate that I very much appreciate how much the Czech government has been supportive of Israel on a number of issues, including Israel’s right to self-defense against rocket attacks during Operation Pillar of Defense.

With appreciation,
