Ce système de tunnels massif s’étend sur plus de quatre kilomètres et se ramifie. Son entrée se trouve à seulement 400 mètres du point de passage d’Erez, utilisé quotidiennement par les habitants de Gaza pour entrer en Israël afin de travailler et de recevoir des soins médicaux dans les hôpitaux israéliens. Ce projet de système de tunnels était dirigé par Mohammad Sinwar, frère du chef du Hamas, Yahya Sinwar, et commandant du bataillon de Khan Yunis du Hamas.
